India launches 100th space mission succesfully

Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), Sep 9, 2012 :
India today successfully launched its 100th space mission with the indigenous PSLV-C21 rocket putting in orbit two foreign satellites
.

In a copybook launch, witnessed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ISRO's workhorse PSLV placed in orbit France's SPOT 6 satellite and Japanese spacecraft PROTIERES, some 18 minutes after a perfect lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here.

The launch, scheduled for 9.51 AM, was delayed by two minutes at the end of the 51-hour countdown. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), on its 22nd flight, soared into an overcast sky at 9.53 AM carrying the 720 kg French satellite, the heaviest satellite to be launched by India for a foreign client.

The mission was described as "a spectacular success" and a milestone by Singh, who keenly watched the entire launch sequence and applauded each stage separation culminating in the placing of the two satellites in orbit.

The launch was a landmark for Indian Space Research Organistion (ISRO) which began its space odyssey on a humble note when it launched the indigenous 'Aryabhatta' on board a Russian rocket on April 19, 1975.

The launch has yet again demonstrated the versatality and robustness of PSLV with the rocket completing its 21st successful mission in a row since its first failed flight in September 1993.

No Indian satellite was onboard today's flight which is the third wholly commercial launch undertaken by ISRO for foreign clients. SPOT-6 is the biggest commercial lift so far since India forayed into the money spinning commercial satellite launch services after 350 kg Agile of Italy put in orbit in 2007 by PSLV. Twelve other foreign commercial satellites launched by ISRO weighed below 300 kg.

Significantly, France's five earlier SPOT satellites were launched by European Araine rocket. SPOT-6, built by ASTRIUM SAS, a subsidiary of EADS, France, is an earth observation satellite, while the micro satellite PROITERES, developed by students and faculty of Osaka Institute of Technology, will study Kansai region of Japanese island of Honshu.

Exclusive: Regulators irate at NY action against Standard Chartered

Current News Updates, 08th Aug 2012: The Treasury Department and Federal Reserve were blindsided and angered by New York's banking regulator's decision to launch an explosive attack on Standard Chartered Plc over $250 billion in alleged money laundering transactions tied to Iran, sources familiar with the situation said.

By going it alone through the order he issued on Monday, Benjamin Lawsky, head of the recently created New York State Department of Financial Services, also complicates talks between the Treasury and London-based Standard Chartered to settle claims over the transactions, several of the sources said.

Lawsky's stunning move, which included releasing embarrassing communications and details of the bank's alleged defiance of U.S. sanctions against Iran, is rewriting the playbook on how foreign banks settle cases involving the processing of shadowy funds tied to sanctioned countries. In the past, such cases have usually been settled through negotiation - with public shaming kept to a minimum.

In his order, Lawsky said Standard Chartered's dealings exposed the U.S. banking system to terrorists, drug traffickers and corrupt states. Read Full Story...

Power Is Restored Across India After Massive Blackout

Passengers waited Tuesday for train service to be restored in New Delhi. More Photos »
NEW DELHI – As electric power was restored across India on Wednesday, the nation’s new power minister sought to tamp down a growing argument between state and federal ministers over who was to blame for Tuesday’s unprecedented blackout.

“I don’t think one can have a blame game between the state and the center,” said Veerappa Moily, the new power minister.

More than half of India’s population lost electricity on Tuesday after a cascading series of problems in three of the nation’s power grids shut down power from Imphal in the east to Jaisalmer in the west, and from Leh in the north to Bhubaneswar in the middle of the country.

The blackout affected an area encompassing about 670 million people, or roughly 10 percent of the world’s population. It trapped coal miners, stranded train passengers and caused huge traffic jams in the nation’s capital. Read Full Story...

Olympics Opening Ceremony 2012: Director Danny Boyle to Bring Spectacle and Surprises to Event

The Queen's rowbarge 'Gloriana' carries the Olympic flame along the river Thames from Hampton Court to City Hall on the final day of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay on July 27, 2012 in London, England.
London - Olympics: Now that the Olympic torch has made its way through the streets of London, even passing Prince William and Kate Middleton at Buckingham Palace, excitement is building for the opening ceremony. But as the world watches, the one question on everyone's mind is: Who will light the cauldron at Olympic stadium?

Thousands of people packed London's Hyde Park as the torch made its last stop before the official start of the games tonight. Nearly 60,000 spectators, including the world's top athletes, will be on hand to witness the extravaganza.

Early reports indicate that the ceremony will include a pastoral countryside and 120 farm animals -- including 70 sheep, 12 horses, and three cows. There is also talk of a fake rain cloud, for effect. The full look is said to resemble a live movie, taking viewers through years of Great Britain's history.

On Friday morning, glimpses of last-minute rehearsals with Boyle's cast and crew of 10,000 could be seen, while the 86-track play list for the three-hour show leaked to the British press.

Included on the track are some British staples -- "God Save the Queen" will be heard, as Queen Elizabeth II will be in attendance. But Boyle, also known for edgier fare such as 1996's "Trainspotting," has opted to use the grimier Sex Pistols version of the anthem.

There will also, of course, be plenty of Beatles selections, and Paul McCartney will lead the crowd in a sing-along.

Although the masses won't know who will be the last person hold the Olympic torch and light the cauldron, excitement is at fever pitch, particularly among some of the athletes, who have spent years working and sweating and hoping to reach this moment.

"I'm ecstatic," U.S. boxer James Herring told ABC News. "I'm really excited just to see the performers and the show that they will be putting on for us, so I'm just -- really just filled with energy right now."

American diver Abby Johnston said that the ceremony will make her realize her dream is finally coming true.

"I'm still like -- is this real? Am I really here?" she said. "And I think being at the opening ceremonies will really make it sink in."

July 9 PC Germs : FBI Has Fix for 'DNS Changer' Germs

The FBI alerts that 277,000 pcs globally could drop online connection unless customers implement a fix to the "DNS changer" malware.

Without a fix that is being put out by the FBI, it is possible that tens of many individuals contaminated by the DNS Filter computer virus could drop entry to the Internet on Thursday, July 9th.

The Huffington Publish revealed in Apr that the issue started when worldwide online hackers — aka "Operation Spider Click" — ran an internet promotion fraud to take control of contaminated pcs.

The FBI has set up a web page that will examine to see if a visitor's computer is using "rogue DNS". There is also a papers on the website that describes how to fix the issue.  The Los Angeles Nation Sheriff's Division has sent out an advisory to county citizens with Internet problems to examine the website.

The issue occurs during the process of closing down the pc. Once the shut down is complete, pcs contaminated by DNS Filter could drop online connection. D-day is set for July 9.

According to CBS Information, although down from the number revealed in Apr, some 277,000 pcs worldwide—64,000 of them in the Combined States—could still be contaminated.

The FBI is still encouraging customers to visit www.dcwg.org, a web page run by its security associate, to find out whether their computer is contaminated and how to fix the issue.

After July 9, any pcs still contaminated will not be able to accessibility the Internet. Many people do not know whether or not their pcs have been impacted.

Colorado wildfires worsen, 32,000 flee homes

Smoke billows from a wildfire burning near Colorado Springs, Colorado
(Reuters) - A wildfire raging near some of Colorado's most popular tourist sites worsened on Tuesday, forcing 32,000 people from their homes, prompting evacuations from the U.S. Air Force Academy and swallowing numerous houses at the edge of Colorado Springs.

From the vantage point of a command post about 10 miles from the path of advancing flames, the entire community of Mountain Shadows, a northwest subdivision, appeared to be enveloped in an orange glow after dark.

"This is a fire of epic proportions," Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown said as ash drifted down on the city and the thick smell of smoke permeated the air.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper flew into the city Tuesday night by helicopter to meet with fire commanders and tour the fire zone first-hand. He noted that the blaze was one of at least a dozen wildfires burning throughout the state.

"This is the worst fire season in the history of Colorado," he said during an impromptu news conference, adding that from the air he saw many homes destroyed in a glowing landscape that looked "surreal."

The Waldo Canyon Fire, which has roared through at least 6,200 acres of dry timber since Saturday, has grabbed attention for days because of its proximity to landmarks like the famed mountaintop of Pikes Peak and the Air Force Academy. Continue Reading...

Czech Republic Vs. Portugal: Predicting Euro 2012 quarter-finals no easy task

At this moment, eight is enough at Euro 2012. Unless, of course, you are one of the eight who must have had enough after being sent home following the opening round of the tournament.

Russia and the Netherlands, in particular, ran away with their tails between their legs. Neither of the host countries, Poland or Ukraine, saw their hard work trudge them into the quarter-finals. Sweden looked unfortunately too old. Denmark doesn't have enough star power. Croatia complained about the referee to no avail and the happy hoard that was Ireland lost every game and won every heart.

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to win the Euro 2012 Cup
If we are honest, all the qualifiers save one should have been predicted - even that group of death that did in the Netherlands. Greece was the shock because the Russians got complacent and, quite probably, started to believe their press after cracking four past the Czech Republic in their opening game.

Now it's time to use knowledge gained so far to make new predictions, not an easy task considering more parity of performance has been on show than I've ever seen.

Cristiano Ronaldo during the practice session
In addition, teams have been winning with two distinct styles of play - deep defence or dominant possession. Quite a conundrum.
Upcoming Quater finals Matches:

SPAIN vs. FRANCE (Saturday)
ENGLAND vs. ITALY (Sunday)

World Leaders Weigh Stimulus Vs. Austerity at G-20

With major European economies on the brink of collapse, leaders concluding an annual Group of 20 meeting sought Tuesday to reassure the world that they would find a way to put out the debt-fueled economic wildfire that has threatened banks, wiped out jobs and toppled governments across the continent.
But the presidents and prime ministers gathered in this seaside resort seemed content to delay any major decisions for a while longer, releasing only a general statement that stopped short of committing any nations to greater spending unless conditions worsen and urging fiscal responsibility.
For months, governments and economists have weighed two different paths to ease the financial crisis: spending more to try to stimulate growth or slashing budgets. European leaders headed home without announcing any significant agreements, and they aimed to meet again later this month in Brussels, with a goal of adopting a more detailed plan. Read More...

US, Russia continue Syria discussions

Islamabad: The US and Russia are continuing discussions on a post-Assad transition strategy despite some disagreements on approaches to the settlement of a political crisis in Syria, according to the US State Department.

US Deputy State Secretary Robert Burns met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday on the sidelines of the Hearts of Asia ministerial meeting in Kabul to discuss a wide range of issues, including the situation in Syria.

"It was a constructive conversation. I won't say there aren't still gaps. There are still gaps, but it was a constructive conversation. And we're continuing to talk to the Russians about this [crisis in Syria]," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said at a news briefing on Thursday.

Russia has twice -- along with China -- vetoed UN resolutions against Damascus over what it calls a pro-rebel bias, but has, however, fully backed UN-Arab envoy Kofi Annan's six-point plan.

Annan's plan calls for withdrawal of heavy weaponry from urban areas and a ceasefire to end 15-months of spiralling violence there.

According to UN estimates, over 10,000 people have been killed in Syria since the beginning of a popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011.

Jaswant Singh for Vice President? Not that I know of, says Sharad Yadav

Jaswant Singh calls on Mulayam SIngh Yadav
New Delhi: The opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) convenor Sharad Yadav has said the BJP-led NDA has not zeroed on names for the posts of President and Vice President so far.
"People meet each other. We have not decided for any name in any meeting of NDA. Only Jaswant Singh can tell whom did he meet and why did he meet. It is normal. We keep meeting," he said when asked whether NDA could propose Mr Singh's name for Vice President's post.
BJP's Jaswant Singh had yesterday met Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav triggering speculation that he was seeking Samajwadi support for the Vice President's office.
Sharad Yadav, who is also the President Janata Dal-United (JDU), also dismissed reports that his party has indicated its preference for Vice President Hamid Ansari as the next President Read More...

Egypt election: Will Egyptians respect the outcome?

An artist puts the finishing touches to a mural depicting some of the candidates alongside faces from the old regime
When polling stations open for Egypt's presidential elections on Wednesday, voters will be choosing between an extraordinary range of options.

The choice they make will not just determine the country's immediate future - it will decide what sort of Egypt will be built on the foundations of last year's uprising against authoritarian rule.

Among the 12 candidates, there are some who would see themselves as guardians of the spirit of last year's Tahrir Square uprising, others who are Islamists, and one or two with roots in the old political system.

In many ways, those latter candidates are the most interesting.

Building a democracy

Amr Moussa was once Hosni Mubarak's foreign minister, although he was eventually sidelined - apparently for becoming too popular - and ended up running the Arab league.

He has experience which many older Egyptians find reassuring, but he is also able to argue that his relationship with the old regime was somewhat semi-detached. Read More...

CBI raids homes of Yeddyurappa and family

Bangalore, May 16 (IANS): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided residences of former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and his kin here and in Shimoga early Wednesday for their alleged role in the multi-crore mining scam  in the state.

"Our teams are searching for certain documents in the residences of Yeddyurappa and his relatives in Bangalore and Shimoga. The search is still on," a senior CBI official told IANS here.

The pre-dawn raids in Bangalore and Shimoga, about 270 km from here, began after CBI late Tuesday registered a case against Yeddyurappa, his two sons, B.S. Vijayendra and B.S. Raghavendra, son-in-law Sohan Kumar and mining baron Praveen Chandra under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Read More...

Lawyers for China dissident's nephew say they face threats

Blind activist Chen Guangcheng (C) speaks with his wife Yuan Weijing (2nd R) and children as U.S. ambassador to China Gary Locke (facing camera, 3rd R) and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell (facing camera, 4th R) stands nearby in a Beijing hospital, in this handout picture from the U.S
(Reuters) - Chinese legal authorities have confiscated the license of one lawyer and threatened to do the same to another after they volunteered to defend Chen Kegui, the nephew of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng.

The moves come as Chen Guangcheng, whose escape last month sparked an international furor, said Chinese officials were "going crazy" with reprisals against his family in eastern Shandong province in revenge for his recent escape from house arrest.
Chen Guangcheng's escape caused embarrassment for China and led to a diplomatic crisis in U.S.-Sino relations.

The Chinese Communist Party has always been wary of lawyers, who officials suspect could challenge one-party rule through their advocacy of the rule of law. Authorities have frequently sought to prevent lawyers from taking up politically sensitive cases by suspending their licenses to practice law.

Chen Wuquan, a lawyer based in the southern province of Guangdong, told Reuters the Guangzhou Lawyers' Association had confiscated his license "temporarily" last week during a standard annual renewal of licenses. The lawyer Chen is not related to the Chen family from Shandong. Read More...
